Robert G. Thompson, age 70, Grand Forks, ND, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Altru Hospital.

Bob was born June 26, 1952 in Grand Forks, the son of Herman and Sally Thompson. Bob was raised in Grand Forks and graduated from Central High School in 1970.

Bob was drafted and played for the Cincinnati Reds minor league team as a pitcher. While pitching for the Reds, his highlight was striking out Dave Parker from the Pittsburgh Pirates three times. Another highlight was striking out Dave Winfield in a Babe Ruth tournament.

Bob married Barb Matz on October 2, 1971 in Grand Forks where they made their home and raised two children, David and Amie. Bob loved spending time with family, playing UNO, dice, cards, cooking a feast, lake time, fishing, hunting, deer processing throughout the years, and going for joyrides on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Bob also enjoyed going for rides in his truck with his wife and his dog, Bailee Rose. Bob loved to wear T-shirts, shorts and sandals even when it was 50 below zero.

Bob worked at Ireland’s Lumber Yard, Economy Plumbing, Lunski Plumbing, the Grand Forks Air Force Base, and Douglas Place from where he retired in 2018.

Bob is survived by his wife, Barb; children, David (Michelle) Thompson, and Amie Iverson; grandchildren, Jessica Iverson, Tyler Thompson, and Abigail Iverson; his pride and joy dog, Bailee Rose; sister, Sharon (Doug) Doyle, Ramsey, MN; brother-in-law, Robert (Claudia) Matz; uncle, Rixon Rafter, Salinas, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, ed and Irene Matz; sister-in-law, Sharon Bohn; and brother in law, Dick Bohn.

Bob’s request was to not have a funeral. Family will gather for a prayer service this summer.
