Bryon Smith

February 10, 1970 — January 8, 2021

It is with great sadness the loss of our son, brother and uncle.

Bryon peacefully passed away at Altru Hospital on January 7, 2021.

Born February 10, 1970 @ Northwood ND to Veronica (Kurt) Apolony and Bernard Smith (deceased)

Bryon worked at Squires cafeteria at UND through job coach services. He attended Development Homes ACES program, Anne Carlson’s and LISTEN when he was unable to work at UND.

He attended and graduated from Valley Junior High School in Grand Forks ND. While attending different schools he participated in Special Olympics. He twice was an Olympian at the International Special Olympic games, one in Minneapolis MN and Notre Dame. Through all his Special Olympics, he came home with many gold, silver and bronze medals and ribbons in swimming, track and field events. He played with the LISTEN Broncos softball team and a bowling league. He also enjoyed playing darts and would frequently beat us at bowling and darts.  Bryon enjoyed going out to eat, watching the Sioux/Hawks on his big screen TV, movies and trips, visits with his mom and stepdad Kurt and camping with friends each summer when he was able to.

Surviving are his brothers: Rick Smith of Grand Forks, Philip Smith (Montague) of Henderson NC; nieces and nephews; stepsisters: Donna Redlinger (Warren) of North Platte NE, Brenda Hogan (Patrick) of Emden, ND, Armita Broeder of North Platte NE; Uncles Paul Vareberg of Pittsburgh, PA and Larry Vareberg of Rochester MN.

Preceding Bryon in death are his father Bernard Smith, Sister-in-law Tracy Smith, grandmother Helen Vareberg, great grandfather, Dedrick Hillesland, Uncle Roland Hillesland, great Aunt Ona Lokken, great Uncle Dick Hillesland, JR.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when we can gather to share our memories of Bryon.
In Lieu of flowers, a donation to Development Homes Inc. in memory of Bryon.
