Claire Skarperud Moen, 72, Grand Forks, ND, passed away in her home on Monday, February 12, 2024. 

Claire was born May 11, 1951 in Mayville, ND, the daughter of Leon and Agnes (Molvig) Skarperud. She was raised in Mayville and graduated from Mayville High School. She graduated from the University of North Dakota (UND) in 1973 with a degree in physical education with a minor in speech. Claire’s first job was teaching in Stavanger, Norway.

Claire married Richard Moen on November 30, 1974 at Mayville Lutheran Church. They lived in West Oslo, ND while Claire taught school in Grafton, ND for seven years. Claire subsequently returned to UND and earned her nursing degree. She worked as an ICU nurse at United Hospital of Grand Forks. Claire and her family briefly moved to Bismarck, ND, in between her two stints at United Hospital, when she founded LifeSource of North Dakota.  After returning to Grand Forks, Claire worked as an SCCU nurse at the hospital. Overall, she worked 18 years at United.  Claire went on to work at UND as the Workers Compensation Claims Coordinator. She also taught ergonomics classes. Claire retired from UND in 2013.  During her tenure at UND, she also earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership in 2007. 

Claire enjoyed photography and scrap booking. She also loved traveling, following her children’s sporting events and activities, and spending time with her dogs. While attending UND, she sang in the concert choir and acted in several plays. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and lettered in volleyball.

Survivors include her husband, Richard, Grand Forks; sons, Brandon (Autumn) Moen, Charlotte, NC, Bryce (Sara) Moen, Dallas, TX, and Benjamin (Keleigh) Moen, Grand Forks; grandchildren, Indiana, Blake, Gunnar, Titus, Latham, Chandler and Devyn; brother, James (Barbara) Skarperud; and sister, Jean Angela Brown.

Claire was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be Sunday February 18, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.
