Clarence LaVerne Brotherton

July 6, 1937 — June 23, 2025

Clarence L. Brotherton, 87 of Grand Forks, North Dakota died Monday, June 23, 2025, at Villa St. Vincent, Crookston, Minnesota.

Clarence was born on July 6, 1937, the son of Elwood and Mabel (Berry) Brotherton in Lewiston, Idaho. He was raised and educated in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. Clarence graduated from Rosalia High School in Rosalia, Washington in 1956.

Clarence attended college at Eastern Washington University. He met Eleanor Schmidt while attending Eastern Washington and they were married on February 1, 1958, in Pullman, Washington.

Clarence began his career with Northern Pacific Railroad in 1958 which merged with Burlington Northern Sante Fe. Clarence and Eleanor lived in various places in the United States due to Clarence’s career with the railroad. They eventually moved to Grand Forks in the late 80’s. He eventually retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1995.

Clarence enjoyed Bible study, golfing, playing cards, crossword puzzles and telling stories from the past. Clarence and Eleanor also enjoyed traveling to the east and west coast to visit their children until Eleanor’s passing in 2004.

Clarence is survived by his children, Rosetta (Ken) Jones, Michael (Linda) Brotherton, David (James Land) Brotherton and Thomas (Marie) Brotherton; granddaughter, Alyce (Winston) Jones; cousin, JoAnne Stroud.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Eleanor.
