Donald Mayers

Donald E. Mayers, 97, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Valley Memorial Homes.

Donald was born February 19, 1924, in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Fred and Frieda Mayers.

He grew up on a farm in rural North Dakota, attended Ellendal school through the seventh grade and had to leave to help out on the farm.

He served in the Army in 1945 and 1946 as military police in Alaska. After being discharged from the Army he worked in the shipyards in Duluth, MN.

Donald married Lorene Brevik October 31, 1947, in Crookston, MN. They made their home in Thompson, ND, where they raised 7 children.

He worked for a while building and repairing elevators with his father-in-law. In 1951, he started working for Great Northern Railroad as a line signalman and worked for them until 1985, when he retired.

After retirement, he was constantly busy, working on the farm for his brother, Jimmy and Larry Holien. He served as a councilman for Thompson, a volunteer fireman for Thompson, was active with the American Legion. He was also a member of the men's club at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, he spent many hours working on the new church when it was being built and was a big part of the starting of the annual fish fry at the church.

His happiest moments were spent with his children, grandchildren, family & friends and people around him to visit with. He loved to fish, go camping in his fifth wheeler and in his younger years, hunting. He was a big, Minnesota Vikings fan.

Donald is survived by his children, Cheryl Lynch of Grand Forks, ND, Cathy Leiss of Dickinson, ND, Connie (Russell) Dreyer, Brainerd, MN, Steven Mayers of Dickinson, ND, David Mayers of Buxton, ND, Daniel (Debra) Mayers, Thompson, ND, son-in-law John Polley; sister Betty Lombness of Michigan; 10 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren, and 10 step-great grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene, infant son, Larry Mayers, daughter, Caryn Polley, grandson, Jody Hilmer; granddaughters Tara Lynch & Kristin Langenfeld; son-in-law, Alvin Leiss; parents, Fred & Frieda Mayers; brothers: Herald, Richard, Vincent, James, Herald Edwin; sisters: Adeline, Lorraine, Lydia, Francis & Evelyn.

Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 19, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. at Amundson Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service.
Burial will be held at Thompson City Cemetery, Thompson, ND.
