Duane Leonard Christenson, longtime educator and theater director, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 82.
Born September 5, 1943, in Grafton, North Dakota, to Edythe and Leonard Christenson, Duane was raised on a family farm in Bowesmont. He graduated from Grafton High School and earned a degree in Speech with minor in Chemistry and English from North Dakota State University, later completing a Master’s Degree in English at the University of North Dakota.
In 1966, he married Linda, his beloved wife and lifelong collaborator. Together they devoted their lives to education and the arts while raising four children: Jane, Jason, Job, and Emily.
Duane began teaching in North Dakota communities before joining Grand Forks Central High School in 1974, where he served for 28 years as an English, Speech, and Theater educator. He built a respected theater program, directed numerous productions, and mentored students who went on to careers in the performing arts and education. He was inducted into the Communication Speech and Theater Association of North Dakota Hall of Fame in recognition of his lasting contributions.
Following retirement, he continued directing, teaching, and supporting community arts organizations. After the passing of his wife, he pursued travel and remained active in civic and cultural life.
Duane is survived by his children - Jane (Tom) Nastick, Job (Jason Campbell) Christenson, and Emily (Michael) Calderin, Son-in Law Cesare Casarino - and four grandchildren: Jordan, Caleb (Emily), Katherine, and Daniel. His siblings - Cheryl (Wade) Gjevre, Shirley Teske, and George (Donna) Christenson. Sister-law Deb (Rod) Hadland and Cleo Christenson and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Leonard and Edythe, father and mother-in-law Barbara and Neil Medley, his wife Linda, son Jason and brothers, Earl, Dale, Glenn and Neil Christenson. Nieces Geraldine Christenson and Elizabeth Teske and brother-in-law Neil Medley.
In accordance with his wishes, his body was donated to science for education and research. His legacy endures in the many lives he touched and in his steadfast belief in the enduring power of live theater and education.
A celebration of his life is planned for Saturday, September 5th. Details will be released at a later date.
