Elaine J. McDonald, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, at Northwood Deaconess Health Center.
Elaine Joyce Lunski on August 14, 1946, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Isadore and Helen (Briski) Lunski. Elaine’s formative years were spent attending school in Lavant Township, Ardoch, and Gilby, culminating in her graduation from Midway School. Her journey through life was one of tireless effort and heartfelt connection. In her early years, she supported herself as a waitress at the Kite Café in Michigan, ND, a humble beginning to a life built on service and care. Her marriage to John McDonald Jr. on November 12, 1966, at St. John's Church in Ardoch, was a steadfast partnership filled with love and resilience. Elaine’s commitment to her family was evident in countless ways, from the embroidered blankets she lovingly crafted for each of her grandchildren to her deep enjoyment of working on the farm, raising beef cattle, and treasuring time spent with family and friends.
Her hands were never still, whether hauling water or driving trucks, or dedicating 18 years as a school bus driver for Midway School. Through all these roles, Elaine’s love for family remained central. Alongside Helen and her daughter, Jodie, she worked at the Forest River Cafe for 37 years, weaving together work and family in a legacy of shared efforts and mutual support before retiring in 2015.
Those who knew Elaine well remember her legendary homemade bread, a simple yet profound expression of her nurturing spirit. Elaine was known for her loving, giving nature and unwavering hardworking spirit—qualities that defined not only her character but also the warmth she brought into the lives of those around her. She was much more than a caretaker of the land and her family; she was a beacon of kindness and strength.
Her passing leaves a profound sense of loss among those who had the privilege to know her. Elaine's legacy lives on in the many hearts she touched, the family she nurtured, and the community she served with grace.
Elaine is survived by her children: Jodie (Jeffery) Wohlgamuth, John (Shannon) McDonald III, Jeffrey (Patty) McDonald; brother, Gary (Jeanne) Lunski; grandchildren: Jeffery (Megan) Wohlgamuth, Alex (Madi) Wohlgamuth, Kyle (Hannah) Wohlgamuth, Megan (Mike) Yem, Ashley (Devan) Rundell, Gavin Fielder, Ross McDonald, Ruby McDonald, Rex McDonald and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Isadore and Helen Lunski; husband, John McDonald Jr., brothers, Ernie and Earl Lunski.
