Fern Bunde

Fern (Schubert) Bunde, age 89, of Thompson, North Dakota, died on December 3, 2023.

Fern was born December 24, 1933, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the daughter of Ernest and Gladys (Halvorson) Schubert.

​She was confirmed at Sharon Lutheran Church, attended grade school at Belmont and graduated from Central High School in 1951.

Following graduation, she worked at Newberry's Dime Store, as well as Diana Hughes clothing store, as the assistant manager.

At age 22, she met the love of her life, Ardell Bunde, and they were married at Sharon Lutheran Church on May 27, 1956. They were married for 67 years.

Both Fern and Ardell were active at Sharon Lutheran, with Fern teaching Sunday School and Vacation Sunday School, and later becoming the Sunday School Superintendent. She also participated in Sharon Church Women, as her dedication to her faith and service to the church was one of her life passions.

Later, she got involved with both the Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups at Sharon Lutheran Church. She was also the event planner for the local chapter of Royal Neighbors of America, a volunteer organization that works to provide support and outreach throughout communities.

Additionally, she belonged to the Red River Valley Potato Grower Association and VFW auxiliary. And as a life-long baseball fan, she strongly supported the Minnesota Twins, never missing a game and sending them her “famous” Fern brownies.

​Fern is survived by her husband Ardell; children, David (Cindy) Bunde of Thompson, ND, Debra (Tom) Anderson of East Grand Forks, MN, Karen (Mark) Neubauer of Thompson, ND, and Linda Bunde of Thompson, ND; seven grandchildren, Courtney (Alex) Miller of Wahpeton, ND, Brittany Bunde of Grand Forks, ND, Sophie (Dan) Anderson-Price of England, UK, Joslyn Anderson of East Grand Forks, MN, Blake (Chelsie) Neubauer of Grand Forks, ND, Dylan Neubauer of Thompson, ND, and Bailey Neubauer of Thompson, ND; one great-grandchild, Spencer; one sister, Maurine Hughes of Grand Forks, ND; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. ​Fern is preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at East Walle Lutheran Church, rural Thompson, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 12, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service at Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks. Visitation will continue for the hour before the service in the church. Burial will be in East Walle Lutheran Cemetery.
