James M. Larson, 69 of Grand Forks, North Dakota died Monday, October 27, 2025, at his home with his loving family close by, under the care of hospice.
James Michael Larson was born on July 5, 1956, the son of Delbert and Lois (Galloway) Larson in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where his Father was stationed in the Air Force. Having been raised in a military family, Jim had a very close bond with his siblings and the opportunity to travel the world, spending time in Okinawa and Germany before his family settled in Grand Forks in 1969 to be closer to his Grandparents and the family cabin, he so dearly loved on the Moose River in northern Minnesota.
He attended Jr High and High school in Grand Forks and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1975. Jim married Lorraine Hilliard in 1980, and they made their home in Tioga, North Dakota. Together they raised a daughter, Nicky, and a son, Jason.
Jim spent many years at his family cabin on Lake Sakakawea with his children and their many friends such as Mark, Michael and Jeffrey. It was very important to also have his Grandchildren around him so he could teach them how to swim, grill and sit around the bonfire telling stories. Jim loved perfecting his fishing skills and teaching his children, grandchildren and anyone else how to fish. Always letting them know, “You have to hold your mouth just right if you want to catch the most fish.” Jim also enjoyed hunting deer and pheasant along with fishing, but being with his family was his favorite. You could often hear Jim saying,” We were put on this earth for two reasons, to populate and solve problems.”
Jim worked for Halliburton Oil Company and Ferrell Transport /Power Fuels for most of his career as a truck driver. In 2014 Jim retired and moved back to Grand Forks, spending his winter months in the family home with his sister Debbie and the summer months at the Tomahawk Resort on Black Duck Lake where he was fondly known as “The Foreman”. Jim met Cindy, his loving companion, five years ago and together they and their dog Faith would spend their summers at Black Duck Lake, where they entertained family and friends. Their deck was known as the gathering place where Jim would often share his expertise and love grilling with his neighbors and family. Family was his priority, and he made time whenever possible for a family gathering. The time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren was the time he cherished the most. Jim will be remembered for his good sense of humor and his willingness to always lend a hand.
Jim is survived by his loving companion, Cindy of Grand Forks, ND; a daughter, Nichalate Kaul of Williston, ND; a son, Jason Larson of Tomball, TX; Cindys son James Clark of Minneapolis MN; Eight grandchildren, Brendon (Hannah) Kaul, Dillon (Courtney) Larson, Haylee Larson, Breaunna Kaul, Jordan Kaul, Rylee Larson, Ayden Larson and Elizabeth Larson, Vash Swenson; Three great-grandchildren, Hudson and Paisley Miller and Harper Larson; Two sisters, Patty (Joe) Foster of Winchester, CA; Debbie Jeans of Grand Forks, ND; Two brothers Robert (Linda) Larson of Story, WY and Jeff (Kristy) Larson of Fort Gibson, OK; his Uncle Mike (Patty) Sather of Crossville, TN.; He was Uncle Jim to numerous nieces and nephews.
