James A. Petersen, Sr., 87, formerly of Mekinock, ND, passed away Sunday, August 20, 2023 at Aneta Parkview Health Center, Aneta, ND.

James Allen Petersen was born August 14, 1936 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Nels and Dorothy (Jepson) Petersen. He attended schools in Grand Forks County. At a young age, he began working for Burlington Northern Railroad. Much of his working career was as a construction equipment operator building roads, missile sites, and dams across North Dakota and neighboring states. He later returned to the Mekinock, ND where he farmed for 25 years until the time of his retirement.

James enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.

James married Sheila Wiltse on August 17, 1957 in Grand Forks. She passed away April 19, 2006.

James married Lois Spies Hensrud on June 8, 2008 at Park River, ND. She survives along with James’ children, Teresa Petersen, Park River, ND, Jim (Elmira) Petersen, Wentworth, SD, Darel (Dawn) Petersen, Fordville, ND; 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; siblings, Roger (Betty) Petersen, Oregon, Gladys Petersen, Fargo, ND, Grace Priewe, Wyndmere, ND, and Anna Marie Homola, Belle Fourche, SD.

James was preceded in death by his first wife, Sheila and by one grandchild.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, August 25, 2023 at Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will be for the hour before the service in the funeral home. Burial will be in Ness Lutheran Cemetery, Mekinock, ND.
