Janice Hannah Martin, 87 of Emerado, North Dakota passed away peacefully Friday, June 12, 2026, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Jan was born on March 6, 1939, the daughter of Henry and Ottilia Holweger in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She was raised in Emerado and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1956. Jan received her nursing degree from Deaconess Nurses Training and worked at Deaconess Hospital and Rehab Center. Jan also worked as a nurse in Houston, Denver, and Portland.
Jan was united in marriage to Danny Martin on June 30, 1967, at Zion Methodist Church in Grand Forks. They made their home in rural Emerado, where they raised their family on the farm.
Jan was an active member of Emerado Presbyterian Church, where she played piano, taught Sunday School, and was a member the Emerado Presbyterian Women. She enjoyed painting, reading, playing piano, and baking. She was known for her delicious cookies and her homemade “grandma” buns. Her greatest joys were raising her children and being a grandma. She was always everyone’s biggest cheerleader. Jan was a caretaker by nature, and it showed in the many ways she loved and cared for family and friends.
Jan is survived by her son, Matthew (Heather) Martin of Lansford, ND; daughters, Nicole (Brad Warnke) Martin of Emerado, ND and Merry (Scott) Knudsvig of Minot, ND; grandchildren, Connor, Callie and Cole Martin, Hayden and Grace Sands, and Sam Knudsvig; brother-in-law, Lee Martin of Grand Forks, ND; three sisters-in-law, Barb Martin of Emerado, ND, Helen Coleman of Apache Junction, AZ, and Wanda Martin of Grand Forks, ND; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Danny Martin (2014), sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Marlin Jacobson, brothers-in-law, Steve and Rodney Martin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Pleasant View Cemetery, c/o Barb Huus, Box 223, Hatton, ND 58240.
A private family gathering will be held to honor and celebrate Jan.
