Jean Marie Skavlem, age 99, a lifelong resident of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, at Valley Senior Living.
Jean was born in Crookston on May 23, 1926, to James and Gladys (Kienast) Thompson. She grew up in Grand Forks and graduated from Central High School in 1943. On June 9, 1946, she married her next-door neighbor and the love of her life, Theodore “Ted” Skavlem.
Jean spent many years working at JCPenney, where she formed lifelong friendships. She later worked in the Clerk’s Office at the Grand Forks County Courthouse, retiring in 1992 after years of dedicated service.
Always one to keep busy, Jean remained active in retirement through her volunteer work at Altru, serving as a bailiff when needed, and working County elections.
Jean cherished over forty summers spent with her family at Cass Lake, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. She also enjoyed bowling and never missed her weekly card club with friends, where laughter and companionship were always plentiful.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; her parents; her brother, Vernon; her granddaughter, Samantha; and her daughter-in-law, Mandi.
She is survived by her two sons, Scott and Fred, and daughter Linnea (Chuck) Griffin; four grandchildren, Chelsea (Jason) King, Andrea Griffin, Chris (Haley) Griffin, and Melissa (Chris) Hennum; and eight great-grandchildren, all of whom were a great source of joy and pride in her life.
Jean will be remembered for her strength, strong work ethic, and the deep love she held for her family and friends.
