James Michael (Jim) Lyons, 76, of Grand Forks, ND died Thursday Sept. 21, 2023 at Altru Hospital following a long, hard battle with kidney issues. Jim was born in Grand Forks on Aug. 30, 1947 to James W (Budd) Lyons and Mary "Dot" (Bennett) Lyons. He attended St. Michael's grade school and graduated from St. James High School in 1965. Upon graduation he attended UND in Grand Forks and North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton. In 1969 Jim was drafted into the US Army. He completed his basic and advanced infantry training at Ft. Lewis, Washington. The remainder of his time in the military was served in Viet Nam with the 101st Airborne.. of which he was very proud. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. As Jim put it..."I was just doing my job".
Upon his return to Grand Forks, he met Daisy Giedd and they were married in 1974. He loved Daisy so much and would have given her the moon.
Jim's employment, his entire life, was in the family business, Lyons Auto Supply. He was well known for his automotive knowledge, his love of cars (especially Pontiac GTOs), and was frequently referred to as 'the carburetor guy'.
Jim was a quiet, kind and generous man who always put family first.
Jim is survived by his wife Daisy, sons Casey and Shawn, grandchildren Caden, Canyn and Michael. Also surviving are a brother John (Sherry) Lyons, sister Jani Bohn (Duane Hovet), and in-laws Willie and Gary Moen, Harlan Giedd, Randy and Rose Giedd, Linda Giedd, Lillie and Geff Magsam, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim is also survived by a million friends and customers who loved and respected him.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Randy and Ann Giedd, Joe Giedd and Regina Verkonski.
Visitation will be at Amundson Funeral Home on Thursday Sept. 28, from 5-7 pm. A funeral service will follow. Burial, with military honors, will be at 10 am Friday, Sept. 29, 2023 at Memorial Park Cemetery North. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The Veterans Memorial Park in Grand Forks. They can be sent to the GF Park District attention George Hellyer.
