John Joseph Johnson, known as JJ to his family, passed away on January 21, 2026, in the comfort of his home in Grand Forks, ND. He was born in the picturesque town of Newport, Rhode Island, on November 20, 1957. He was adopted by Gary J. and Mary M (Neronha) Johnson.
John’s journey began amidst the historical charm of Newport, RI where his family was stationed as his dad was in the Navy. As a teenager, he moved to North Dakota with his parents and siblings where he called Grafton home for a time before finding his place in Grand Forks. He and his mother were avid members of the Salvation Army where they attended church and volunteered.
John lived happily for over 30 years with the unwavering support of REM staff, Community Options staff, and Grand Forks Growth and Support staff. His days were full of activities and friendships and was always ready to share a laugh or a good joke. John found joy in the simplest pleasures, whether it be the thrill of a friendly bingo game, the serenity of fishing by the water, or relishing the flavors of a glass of Jack Daniels or a trip to Fargo.
Art was a major part of John’s life. Any time you saw him, he would be drawing or painting or creating something new. He poured his heart into his creations, with many pieces proudly displayed in his room and home, capturing not only his artistic flair but also the essence of who he was. Not content with merely creating, he took the art of collaboration to heart, assisting with murals at his day program and leaving a colorful imprint on the lives of everyone around him.
John's humor, artistry, and authentic nature made him not just a wonderful man but a beacon of light to all who were fortunate enough to meet him. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and artistic expression that will forever echo in the hearts of his friends and in the welcoming halls of his cherished community.
John is survived by his siblings: Theresa “Terry” Adams, Bonnie Sweats, Emma (Michael) Frankilin, Holley Johnson, Tracey Johnson, David Johnson and Gary Johnson Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving parents and a brother James Johnson.
