Liv Halvorson

Liv Bergliot Bjorlie-Halvorson (nee Lundeby), age 90, passed away September 12, 2022, with her family by her side. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed for her encouragement, generosity, strong leadership skills and hospitality.

Liv grew up near Tolna, North Dakota on the family homestead where she learned the value of hard work and strong family connections. She kept her heritage from Norway alive by connecting to her relatives there and continuing family traditions.

She is an alumnus of Oak Grove Lutheran High School and Valley City College. After graduating she continued graduate studies in geriatrics and worked in the fields of management in rest home and hospital facilities. Liv was an active member of the Democratic-Nonpartisan League. In 1964, she became the nation’s youngest Democratic National Committeewoman at the age of 31, serving North Dakota for several years.

She was also active in the American Association of University Women, the National Youth Advisory Council, the Peace Corps, Farmers Union, and the International Platform Association.

She was Preceded in death by her husband Vern Halvorson and she was the last surviving sibling in her family of parents Fred and Anna Lundeby, brothers Torbjorn and Iver (Shirley), and sisters Vivian (Carl) Ringdahl, Gudrid (Jim) Gordon, and Solveig (Bill) Nelson.

Liv is survived by her children Peter (Kathy) Bjorlie, Anna (Tim) Donahue, John (Ann) Bjorlie, Paul (Crysti) Bjorlie, and Laura (Chris) Harmon, Grand children Sandy, Christina, Jeremy, Daniel, Michael, Nathaniel, Hannah, Ruth, Peter, James, John, Seth, Benjamin, Joseph, Thomas, Elijah, Jacob, Esther, Isaac, Anna, Naomi, Dan, Liv, Meseret, Almaz, and Solomon and many more great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, October 15 at 3:00 pm at the American Lutheran Church, 219 Main St., Tolna, ND 58380.
