Marlys C. Moen, 91, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota following a brief illness.
Marlys is survived by her sister, Beverly Gilbertson of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, daughters Merrilee (Steve) Horton of Maplewood, Minnesota, and Laurel "Lol" (Doug) Prince of Rosemount, Minnesota, grandchildren Andrew and Holly Prince, and multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Andrew Moen, and her parents. Marlys was born October 21, 1934 to Carl and Mabel Nelson and raised on a farm near Niagara, North Dakota. Following high school, she earned her teaching certificate and served as an elementary school teacher in Grand Forks for many years. She and Marvin were married in Grand Forks in 1959. They celebrated 60 years of marriage until Marvin’s death in 2019.
Marlys was an active member of United Lutheran Church of Grands Forks, serving in the bell choir, quilting group, ushering, and many other church fellowship and volunteer activities. She enjoyed playing bridge and bunco, sewing, playing her piano, and crafting. She loved music and went to many concerts at the Chester Fritz with her friends. Most of all, Marlys enjoyed spending time with her many friends, her children and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed painting, coloring, and most recently diamond art with her granddaughter Holly. She had a graceful, joyous spirit that people loved. She will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at United Lutheran Church, 324 Chestnut Street, Grand Forks, on Friday, January 23, at 1 p.m., with a memorial service at 2 p.m. Lunch immediately following. Plants or flowers can be sent to United Lutheran Church on the service date, January 23. Memorials to United Lutheran Church, mailed to Merrilee Horton at 2464 Flandrau Street, Maplewood, MN 55109.
