Marvin Harold Kiel, 82, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 23, 2026.
Marvin was born on June 13, 1943, to Roy and Bernadine (Andries) Kiel. He was raised and educated in Grand Forks. As a young boy, he began working as a newspaper delivery carrier and subscription salesman, discovering his lifelong gift for conversation.
In 1964, Marvin married Barbara Neil, and together they welcomed their son, Scott. Though they later divorced, they remained lifelong friends. Marvin continued to be a cherished part of Barb’s extended family, faithfully attending gatherings and celebrations throughout the years. He was a devoted father, brother, and uncle, but his most treasured role was being “Papa”.
Marvin spent many years working as a truck driver before concluding his career with Dakota Supply Group, where he worked for over 20 years. He truly valued the relationships he built along his delivery routes, where many customers became friends.
He enjoyed a wide range of hobbies, including model railroading, woodworking, listening to country music, snowmobiling, camping, and gardening. Always willing to lend a hand, Marvin could often be found helping family and neighbors with home improvements. Building cabinets, decks, projects with his grandsons, or tackling repairs he was happiest when working on something with his hands.
Marvin is survived by his son, Scott (Jill); grandsons Jacob, Adam, and Nicholas; sister Marion Lingle-Coon; brothers Donald Kiel and Richard Kiel; special niece Nicole (Brian) Paschke; honorary daughter-in-law Jan Heitmann; honorary granddaughter Ashley Stauss; many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews; and his loyal cat, Cuddles.
“Papa Mondays” began with the birth of his first grandson and continued long after the boys had grown. Even after they no longer needed rides home from school, these special days became a lasting tradition and a testament to his love and loyalty.
Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating Marvin’s life at one final “Papa Monday” on Monday, April 20, 2026, 2:00 pm, at Calvary North Cemetery. A gathering will follow at Blue Moose in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Narayan and the compassionate staff of Altru ICU for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Marvin and our family.
