Patricia M. “Pat” Berger, 71 of Grand Forks, North Dakota passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at Valley Senior Living in Grand Forks.
Pat was born July 20, 1954, the daughter of John and Virginia (Willis) Morgan in Cleveland, Ohio. She was raised and educated in Bronxville, New York. Pat graduated from Bronxville High School in 1972 and continued her education at Centenary College in New Jersey where she earned an Associate of Arts degree before transferring to Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio and receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1976 in Communications.
Born with a deep commitment to service, Pat spent much of her professional life working in the nonprofit sector. After college she worked at WQED, a public radio station in Pittsburgh, PA before moving back to New York and becoming the President of the Chamber of Commerce in Ossining, New York. Pat met the love of her life, Al Berger, in Ossining while he was doing research on the Rockefeller Family at the Rockefeller Estate in Pocantico, New York. They were married June 17, 1989. At that point Al had taken a faculty position in the History Department at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Pat soon joined him and remained in Grand Forks for the rest of her life. While there she became increasingly involved in community development and charitable work. In 1994 she was named the President & CEO of the United Way of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and the surrounding area and remained in that role for over 24 years. Through her leadership, compassion and tireless commitment, she helped connect donors, volunteers, businesses and agencies in pursuit of a stronger community.
Those who knew Pat remember her as determined, generous, outgoing, fun-loving and deeply connected to the well-being of others in the Grand Forks area. She believed in the power of people working together and spent her career working to create opportunities for individuals and families to thrive.
Pat Loved the Grand Forks community and the lifelong friends she made there. She will be deeply missed by her friends and family. She is survived by her sister, Madeleine (Stephen) Fackler of Los Altos, CA; niece, Katie (Marcelo) Cattani of Los Altos, CA and nephew, Matthew (Aditi) Fackler of Los Altos, CA. Pat was preceded in Death by her parents, husband, Albert Isaac Berger (2023) and sister, Penelope Morgan (2021).
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on Friday, September 18,2026, at 11:00am at Amundson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the charitable group of your choice serving the Grand Forks area.
