Richard "Dick" Swanson

Richard (Dick) Lawrence Swanson, 89, passed away on August 31th, 2025 in Grand Forks, ND. Richard was born February 20th, 1936 to Lawrence and Elvy (Carlson) Swanson in Minneapolis MN. He grew up in Richfield, MN graduating from Richfield Washburn high school in 1954. He continued his education at the University of MN in business before starting his career in the grocery business for over 39 years mostly with Red Owl Stores with many years as a store/district managers throughout MN and ND.

Richard met the love of his life, Susan Hedden, and they were married on March 2, 1957. They resided in Bloomington, MN, Grand Forks, ND, International Falls, MN, and Clearwater, MN. They spent over 15 years wintering in San Antonio, TX. Richard loved to fish and hunt and provided fish guiding services on Rainy Lake for many years.

Richard is survived by his son, Michael (Grand Forks, ND) and daughter, Kelly (Pisek, ND), along with grandchildren David (Danae) of Grand Forks, Angela Swanson of Minneapolis, and Sarah (Zach) Ericson of Hannover, MN plus 10 great grandchildren. Richard was preceded by his wife of 61 years, an infant daughter, son (Steven), daughter-in-law (Sandra) and grandson’s John and Brent.

A graveside service will be held at Orono Cemetery in Elk River, MN. Memorials can be made to the Make-A-Wish foundation of either ND or MN or to the charity of your choice.
