Richard L. Getsman, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, at his home in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
He was born on April 28, 1947, in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Frank and Dorothy (Williams) Getsman. He attended school in Aberdeen, SD. A graduate of Aberdeen high school, Richard completed his education in 1965. Richard later earned both a Bachelor's Degree and double Master's degrees from the University of Mary. His thirst for knowledge exemplified his commitment to personal growth and the pursuit of excellence.
Richard devoted over 24 years to the United States Air Force, where he proudly served and rose through the ranks as a Supervisor in Mess Management and as a Training Systems Technician. His military career was not just about duty; it was a journey that took him to many interesting and surprising places around the globe, where he formed lasting connections and gained invaluable experiences.
Richard's warm personality and genuine love for meeting people shone through in every interaction. He had an extraordinary ability to create meaningful connections, a testament to the kind of man he was—affable, generous, and welcoming.
Nothing brought him more joy than his family. Richard was especially proud of his five children, Tarena (Justin), Kenneth, Charles (Amy), Stephanie (Patrick), and Diana. He cherished the opportunity to spoil his grandchildren, who were a source of endless happiness. Whether playing games, dancing, or sharing treats with them, he was always the fun-loving grandparent, making every moment memorable. His devotion to his family was evident in all he did, embodying the essence of a loving patriarch.
Richard was known for his passions beyond family; he was an avid sports fan, especially of the Oakland Raiders and soccer. His love for food, particularly Asian cuisine, with a special fondness for kimchi, was a source of enjoyment that he often shared with those around him. His evenings spent watching NCIS, the Food Network, and Iron Chef, alongside a refreshing Diet Coke, were simple pleasures that brought him happiness.
He is survived by his children: Tarena Gamble, Charles Getsman, Stephanie Olson, Diana Getsman and grandchildren: Maison Gamble, Makara Gamble, Zaylee Havelka, Katie Getsman, Kyralyn Getsman, Ellie Getsman, Peyton Olson, Mollie Getsman, Liam Olson, and Max Olson.
He is preceded in death by his son, Kenneth, his father, Frank Getsman, and his mother Dorothy Getsman.
