Richard Dean Holum, age 76, passed away on Oct. 10th 2025 surrounded by his loving family in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND from a short illness. He was born on May 9, 1949 in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake, ND to Dennis and Donna Holum.
He spent his early years living near Edmore, ND until his family moved to Grand Forks, ND. He attended grade school at Wilder and Ben Franklin; middle school at South Junior High and High School at Central High School. He would go back to a family farm by Edmore for many summers working for his uncle.
He married Marybeth McMenamy in summer of 1967. They had six children, Michele (Dave) Freije, Angela (David) Roth, Suzanne (Loren) Kartes, Eric (Jill) Holum, Hayley (Keith) Schauer and Heidi Holum. Heidi was deceased shortly after birth.
Rick worked many jobs in the grocery business. Miller’s Fairway, Food Bonanza and then Sam’s Club where he retired in 2008 after 16 yrs. Rick enjoyed going to the farm and taking care of the trees, yard and fishing with friends at the nearby lake. He was also an avid hunter whether it be geese, deer or most recently squirrels that were annoying him.
Rick was very active in softball for 20 years and was the team captain for Coco Cola and Ken’s Auto Alley and on bowling leagues for many years. He also played golf for many years, the highlight was playing on Wailea Emerald Course on Maui, Hawaii.
Rick married Janet Johnson McLean in 1984. They were married for 41 yrs. this past June. They did a lot of traveling to Hawaii, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming.
Rick is survived by his wife, Janet; five children and two stepsons, Todd and Kelly (Kari) McLean, 3 sisters- Julie (Ray) Prew; Jill (Bob) Rositano; Kathy (Jerry) Braaten and brother Tim Holum. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Dennis and Donna Holum, one child, Heidi and one granddaughter, Sarah McLean.
A Memorial Service will be held at Amundson Funeral Home on Friday, October 17th, 2025 at 11:00am. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.
