Roger A. Ackley Sr., age 80, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2026, at Amundson Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Memorial Park North Cemetery in Grand Forks, North Dakota, at a later date.
Roger Alan Ackley was born June 25, 1945, in East Machias, Maine. He graduated from Washington Academy in East Machias in 1963. Following graduation, he worked for two years at Munson Body Shop before being inducted into the United States Air Force on July 7, 1965. Roger honorably served and dedicated himself for over 25 years as an Aerospace Ground Equipment Superintendent; he was honorably discharged on July 31, 1991, as a Senior Master Sergeant. On August 5, 1966, Roger was united in marriage to Beverly McLean. He served in the Vietnam War and then together they moved and lived in many different places, including Maine, Colorado, Minot, Germany, and eventually settled in Grand Forks in 1984.
Roger was an avid outdoorsman; he found joy in sharing his love of fishing, hunting, and camping with his family. He had a talent for fishing, where it seemed the fish would go for only his lure, which sparked conversations with other fishermen. He loved supporting his grandchildren and having silly moments of roughhousing, which came with lots of laughter. Roger’s unconditional love and special connections with his family and grandchildren created memories that will forever be cherished and deeply missed.
Roger is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beverly; children, Veronica Ackley, Roger Jr. (Deborah) Ackley, and Michael (Jan) Ackley; 8 grandchildren, Kyson, Whitney, Ashleigh, Nicholas, Joseph, Karly, Sara, and Bailey; 2 great-grandsons, Grier and Levi; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, and 3 sisters.
