Mae Howe

Mae Howe, 80, Grand Rapids, MN, and formerly of Grand Forks, ND, died Sunday, December 28, 2015 in Grand Forks. Mae Karen Newman was born at Mayville, ND on July 11, 1935 to Harold and Bertha (Gidskemo) Newman.  She was raised and educated at Mayville and is a graduate of Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Fergus Falls, MN.  She continued her education at Mayville State Teachers College and Valley City State College where she earned a teaching degree.  She taught school in Oslo, MN and in Grand Forks.  Mae Newman and Robert “Bob” Howe were united in marriage on February 5, 1961 at Mayville, ND.  They lived in and raised their family in Grand Forks.  They moved to Bismarck, ND for a brief time before retiring to their lake home in Grand Rapids, MN in 1993.    Mae loved living at her home on Deer Lake, MN.  She enjoyed morning coffee in the screen porch, bird watching and gardening.  Mae was a painter of both oil and water.  Mae was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks and St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, MN. Mae is survived by her children, Priscilla (Perry) Marto, Grand Forks, and Rod (Dinah) Howe, Oregon City, OR;  grandchildren, Dan (Emily) Marto and their children,  Nolan and Alaina,  Grand Forks; Jake (Krissy) Marto, Windsor, CO; Savannah Howe, Max Caldwell and Candace Caldwell, Oregon City, OR;  a sister Bea (Stuart) Neset, Mayville, ND;  two sisters-in-law, Mary Newman and Marge Newman; many beloved nieces, nephews and several cousins.  She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Robert who died January 25, 2001; her brothers Donald, Jim and Harold; sister-in-law Ardyce Newman; brother and sister-in-laws Ken and Dellie Howe, Russ and Marion Howe, Bev and Gene Kreidler; Rod and Marilyn Froehling and Carol Howe. Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2016 in Calvary Lutheran Church, 1405 S. 9th St., Grand Forks.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church.  Inurnment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.
