Ron Thiede

Ron Thiede, 61, Grand Forks, died at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fargo on February 24, 2008 Ronald Landon Thiede was born December 11' 1946 in Grand Forks, the firstborn son of Alfred and Edna (Landon) Thiede. He was educated in several northeastern North Dakota communities and graduated from Langdon High School. He attended Aakers Business College in Grand Forks and received a two-year certificate of completion in 1967. He enlisted in the United States Navy in the spring of 1968 and served on the USS Hancock, USS Lipan and the USS Abnaki. He also served in Vietnam and Guam, eventually attaining the rank of Yeoman 2nd class. He received an honorable discharge in 1980. In his civilian life, Ron was employed by the Grand Forks Air Force Base and at the University of North Dakota. Ron was diagnosed with Chronic Leukocytic Leukemia in the fall of 1996. In spite of his illness, Ron enjoyed a good quality of life until recently when treatment options had been exhausted. Ron was a voracious reader and was often seen with a paperback book in his back pocket. He subscribed to numerous news magazines and newspapers and kept abreast of politics and current events. He enjoyed television, movies, and good food. He was very proud of his military service and the opportunities for travel it provided. Per his wishes, his Navy "dress uniform" accompanied him to his earthly resting place. He is survived by his mother, Edna; two brothers, Gary (Annetter) of Tucson, Arizona and Ken (Donna), Bismarck. He is also survived by one nephew, Chan and one niece, Brandi; two aunts, Hattie Bragg of Manvel and Esther Mathewson, Owego, New York; cousins Daryl Bragg, Grand Forks and Judy Jackson, Walkersville, Maryland. Ron was preceded in death by his father Alfred and his grandparents, Ernest and Frances Landon and John and Anna Thiede. **Memorials may be directed to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, North Dakota. . Funeral Services: Wednesday, February 27, at 11:00 a.m. at Amundson Funeral Home 2975 S. 42nd St. in Grand Forks with Pastor Kathy Brown officiating.
