Shawn Nygaard

Shawn Nygaard

Owner/ Licensed Funeral Director

Shawn grew up in Edmore, ND, graduating from Edmore High School in 1998. He attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with a degree in Mortuary Science from the University of Minnesota in 2002. From 2002-2006, Shawn was employed at Stanley-Iverson Funeral Home in McVille, ND Cooperstown, ND and Lakota, ND. In 2006, Shawn accepted a position with David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.

In October of 2023, Shawn and his wife Sarah became owners of Amundson Funeral and Cremation Service. Together they will continue the long-lasting tradition of compassionate care our community has trusted over the years. Shawn and Sarah have three children.

Shawn is a Minnesota and North Dakota licensed funeral director and is a member of the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association as well as the National Funeral Directors Association. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing the FM Walleye tournaments, coaching his son in sporting events, and spending time at the lake with his family.

Phil Amundson

Philip Amundson/Licensed Funeral Director (North Dakota and Minnesota) serving families since 1982.

Phil grew up in Grand Forks, graduating from Red River High School in 1979. He attended UND from 1979-1981, and graduated from Commonwealth College of Funeral Service, Houston, Texas in 1982. He returned to Grand Forks to serve an apprenticeship under the direction of his father, Byron D. Amundson, and has served in the capacity of licensed funeral director since obtaining his license in 1983. He received his Minnesota Mortuary Science License in 1991.

Phil is a member of United Lutheran Church, and has served on numerous boards there, including two terms on the church council, and as NE District Governor of the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. He is a former board member of Northern Valley Youth Orchestras in Grand Forks. His hobbies include fishing and hockey, enjoying time at Long Lake, Minnesota, and traveling to new destinations with his family. Phil and his wife Shelly have two daughters, Anna, who is employed in Grand Forks as an SLP, and Greta, also a student in the nursing program at UND.

Mark Amundson /Licensed Funeral Director (North Dakota and Minnesota) serving families since 1987.

Mark was raised and educated in Grand Forks, graduating from Red River High School in 1981 and from the University of North Dakota in 1985 with a degree in communications. Mark graduated from Commonwealth College of Funeral Service in Houston, Texas in 1987. He returned to Grand Forks and served as an apprentice under his father, Byron D. Amundson.
Mark is a licensed funeral director in both North Dakota and Minnesota. He is also licensed to help families establish pre-need funeral accounts.

Mark enjoys golfing, fishing, and UND Hockey games. Mark and his wife, Julie, have three grown children, Matthew, Alyssa and Joshua.

Devin Hillebrand Devin Hillebrand, a native of Grand Forks, North Dakota joined our professional staff on November 1, 2011. Devin grew up in Grand Forks, attending St. Mary's Elementary School and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 2000 where he was active in band, jazz band, football and track and field. He attended UND from 2001-2005. Then attended Mt. Hood Community College Mortuary Science Program graduating in 2009 with Honors. He then moved to Minot, ND working for a private family owned funeral home serving his apprenticeship and attaining his North Dakota license in 2010 and continued to serve the Minot area until October of 2011.

Devin lives in East Grand Forks with his wife Lauren and children Miles and Gage. He is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grand Forks and the East Grand Forks Rod and Gun Club. Some of his hobbies include: hunting, fishing, enjoying UND athletic events, camping and golf.

Mitch Baumgartner has been a licensed funeral director since 1999, serving families in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.

Erik was raised in Fergus Falls, MN and attended Fergus Falls Senior High School. He graduated with the Class of 2009. Following his high school graduation, he attended Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Fergus Falls/Moorhead. He moved to Chicago, IL in 2012 to attend Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He graduated from Worsham College the following year. Following his graduation, he accepted positions with: Emblom Brenny Funeral Home in Little Falls, MN; Mundwiler Funeral Homes in Ortonville, MN and Milbank, SD; Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City and Daniels Sadler Funeral Home in Grantsboro, NC and Altmeyer Funeral Home in Virginia Beach, VA. He most recently worked as a traveling Funeral Director for the Vertin Company. Erik carries licenses for Mortuary Science in: Minnesota, South Dakota, North Carolina, Virginia and North Dakota.

In 2020, Erik attended the Fountain National Academy in Springfield, MO to specialize in the embalming, preparation and restoration of traumatized deceased. He is also working toward his Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) Certification.

In his limited spare time, Erik enjoys traveling and spending time at his cabin located on Lake Minnewaska, located near Glenwood, MN.
